Tips for a Successful Indoor Photo Session

As we move into the colder months, indoor sessions can be a great option to stay warm and to have a session time that is earlier in the day. If you are thinking of doing an indoor session (either in your own home or a studio), there are a few things that can set you up for success. Here are four tips for a successful indoor photo session.

Lighting

Spaces with lots of large windows work best to ensure we have lots of light to capture your session. Natural lighting is always the most flattering, so we want to turn off all the lights and open up the windows.

Minimal and Intentional Decor

In order for you to stand out, it helps to start with a blank slate. Clearing out the clutter and styling the room(s) more simply can help you be the focus of the image rather than the decor.

Light-Colored/Neutral Walls

Spaces with dark colored walls can make your overall images dark. Obvious, I know. Having light-colored walls really makes a difference in the overall look and feel of an image. Brightly colored walls can also cast colors onto your face and make your skin tone look off, so neutrals are ideal.

Timing

While having lots of windows and natural light is key to a successful indoor session, it’s important to time the session so that the sun isn’t shining directly in the windows during your session. If we are utilizing multiple spaces that face different directions, I recommend a midday time when the sun will be high and not shining in the windows on any side of the space.

There are so many factors that go into a session, but these are just some of the things that can make a big impact in achieving a successful indoor photo session. If you’re interested in exploring an indoor option for your next session, let me know and we can talk through what it would look like!
