If you have been around here for a while, you might remember Devery’s session out at Saltair. It was such a fun experience that we decided to do it again, and I’m so glad we did. Portrait sessions are something I love, and photographing a friend I have known for years is a bonus.
We met at the Daybreak boardwalk for her portrait photography session, and the evening could not have been better. The sun was starting to dip toward the mountains, the temperature was perfect (a treat for the middle of November!), and everything about the setting felt calm and peaceful. She showed up ready, having read through my pre-session guide and finalized her outfit choices ahead of time. We even talked through a few options at orchestra the week before, which I always love. Collaborating and coming together to create something special.
Because we have photographed together before, we settled into a rhythm quickly. There was space to walk, talk, and create without rushing. Devery is always on an adventure, whether she is hiking Kilimanjaro or traveling the world with family and friends, so having her session somewhere new to her just made sense. We had joked earlier about taking a few photos with her car, but once we started strolling along the boardwalk and docks, neither of us felt the need to change course. The light was soft and even, the lake was calm, and we got to slow down and enjoy it.
One of my favorite parts of portrait photography is how the experience can feel both relaxed and intentional. When someone arrives prepared and willing to trust the process, it allows me to lead confidently and gives them the space to be themselves. That balance is where the best images happen.
Driving home afterward, I felt content and grateful. I had spent the morning cutting down a Christmas tree with my family, and ended the day creating with a friend in a beautiful location. It was a day full of tradition, connection, and doing what I love. I am thankful I get to weave all of the things that are important to me into a life I love.
Devery, thank you so much for coming and spending the evening with me! For creating an opportunity to catch up for more than the few minutes we get before and after rehearsal. I had such a great time taking some updated photos for you! We’ll have to continue the tradition and do it again.
