Choosing the right wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding. Before you compare packages or start making spreadsheets, I think there are a few questions worth asking yourselves first.

I think choosing the right wedding photographer has less to do with finding someone who checks every box and more to do with finding someone you’ll trust when the day arrives.
Can you picture spending your wedding day with this person?
On a wedding day, your photographer is often beside you more than almost anyone else. Do you feel comfortable with them? Do you feel like you could be yourself on one of the most emotional days of your lives? Do you think you’d eventually stop thinking about the camera and simply enjoy being together?
Do you feel cared for?
One of my favorite parts of meeting with couples has very little to do with photography. Before we ever talk about timelines or collections, I want to hear about you. How you met. What you’re most excited about. What parts of the day matter most to you. Before I say anything about what I do, I want to know about you. The more I understand what matters to a couple, the better I can help them create a day that reflects what’s important to them.
Would you trust their opinion?
If they suggested something you hadn’t considered, would you be excited to hear it? Planning a wedding is something most couples only do once. You don’t know what you don’t know, and that’s okay. The right photographer won’t just answer your questions. They’ll often answer questions you don’t know to ask.
Will they notice the things you won’t have time to notice?
The way your parents watch as you share your first dance. The flower girl twirling when no one else is looking. Your grandparents holding hands during dinner. The friend quietly fixing your dress without being asked. So much of your day happens without you even seeing it. Not because you’re not there, but because there’s so many moments going on all at once. My favorite thing to hear from couples after they receive their final gallery is the sentiment of, “So much of the gallery was things we didn’t even know happened!”
Your wedding day shouldn’t feel like you’re meeting the person who’s going to spend more time beside you than almost anyone else.
When you’re choosing a photographer, don’t just ask yourself whether you love their work. Ask yourself whether you trust them enough to hear an idea you hadn’t considered. Because the right photographer won’t just document the day you’ve planned. They’ll help you create a day that’s even better.
When your day arrives, I hope you feel surrounded by people you’ve invited into it because you trust them. People who know what’s important to you. People who are looking out for your without being asked. People who care about the experience just as much as the outcome.
