When I talk with people and the topic of photography comes up, the first thing I often hear is some version of, “That’s so great. I would love to do a session, but I’m just not photogenic.”

The truth is, you do not have to be photogenic to love your photos.

I understand the hesitation that comes with being on camera. I feel it myself whenever I am on the other side of it. That hesitation is rarely about appearance alone. More often, it comes from a lack of confidence, a lack of direction, or the quiet pressure to perform for the camera.

What Most People Mean When They Say They’re Not Photogenic

When people say they are not photogenic, they are usually not saying they hate how they look.

They are saying they feel awkward. They are unsure where to stand or what to do with their hands. They worry about doing something wrong.

High school and college seniors often worry about looking natural or grown up enough. Couples often worry about looking stiff or unnatural together. These concerns have very little to do with their bodies and everything to do with unfamiliar situations and a lack of guidance.

Photogenic Is Not a Personality Trait

Being photogenic is not a personality trait.

The word is often used to describe people who have been photographed often. Comfort comes from familiarity and direction, not confidence alone. Few people walk into a brand new experience feeling completely at ease without context or support.

This is true in many areas of life. Starting a new job. Entering a new school. Attending an event in a new city. Confidence grows when we understand what to expect and feel supported through the process.

The photos people tend to love most of themselves are the ones taken when they forgot the camera was there. When they felt comfortable with the people around them, both in front of and behind the camera. That sense of ease did not happen by accident. It was created.

What Actually Helps People Love Their Photos

The same things that build confidence in other areas of life help people feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Knowing what to expect before the session.
Understanding what photographs well so choosing what to wear feels easier.
Walking through the process ahead of time so the day does not feel rushed.
Having someone who guides rather than observes.
Being given space to settle in, joke, and relax instead of perform.

These things change how a session feels. And how it feels shapes what the photos become.

Why This Matters More Than Looking Good

Photos are about more than how you look. They are about remembering who you were in that season.

Seniors want to recognize themselves later. Posing my arm and head against a mirror did not feel like me when I was in high school, and it does not feel like me now.

Couples want to remember how it felt to be together. How it felt when he proposed. How it felt on the wedding day. How it felt walking hand in hand years later.

When you feel seen and supported throughout the process, that recognition carries through to the images themselves.

Before your next session, you do not need to practice smiling in the mirror. You do not need to know your best angles. You do not need to become someone else.

You only need space, guidance, and time to settle into yourself.

You do not have to be photogenic to love your photos. You need someone who will guide you, support you, and feel steady behind the camera. Someone who helps the process feel calm, clear, and human from the start.
