I routinely have people tell me how much they want updated photos.
More often than not, that phrase is followed by with something like,
“we’ll do that when life slows down,”
“when I feel more confident in front of the camera,”
or “when everything feels ‘ready’.”
I understand the hesitation. Life is full, and it rarely feels like the right time. But I have also seen how often those moments never arrive in the way we expect.
It is part of why you should take photos now, not later.
The Reality of Changing Seasons:
Life does not pause.
There is no waiting for the perfect stretch of calm or the version of life where everything feels settled. The season you are ni right now will not look the same a year from now.
What feels ordinary today often becomes meaningful later.
A senior preparing to graduate.
An engaged couple planning a wedding.
A couple years into marriage, building a life that feels steady and familiar.
You rarely realize it is a season worth remembering until it has already changed.
What People Actually Regret
When I talk to people who have waited, the reasons are often the same.
They thought they needed more time.
They wanted to feel more confident.
They assumed there would be a better moment later.
More often than not, what they wish is that they had documented the season they were already in.
What Photos Become Over Time
Photos become something more than images.
They become a way to return to a moment that no longer exists in the same way. A way to remember not just now things looked, but how they felt.
Flipping through albums is one of my favorite things to do with my family. Some moments are remembered clearly. Others are only known through the images and stories that remain.
Either way, they matter.
A Personal Perspective
There was a season in my life that was both beautiful and hard. I was pregnant and not feeling like myself. It would have been easy to wait for it to pass.
When plans for a session fell through, I set up a tripod and took photos anyway.
They were not what I originally imagined. But I am grateful to have them. They hold a season that no longer exists, but still matters deeply to me.
Why Now Is Enough:
You do not need a perfect reason.
You do not need everything to feel settled.
You do not need to wait until you feel more ready.
You only need to care about this season enough to hold onto it.
If you are wondering what that might look like in a way that still feels natural to you, I talk more about how to prepare here:
