I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve heard some version of the same sentence at the end of a family session.
“Thank you for taking a few of just us.”
Then almost immediately…
“We don’t have many pictures together.
Every time someone says it, I find myself thinking the same thing. How did that happen? We take pictures constantly when we’re dating. Weekend trips. Birthdays. Random Tuesday nights. Then engagement photos. Wedding photos. And somewhere after that…we quietly stop.
I love the idea of walking through someone’s home and seeing their story continue after the wedding. Dating. Engagement. Wedding. Five years later. Ten, twenty years later.
Engagement Is Short. Marriage Is Long.
Engagement photos capture a beginning. The excitement, anticipation, and version of you standing at the edge of a new lief together. Wedding photos matter deeply too. They hold one of the most meaningful days of your life.
But neither are the end of the story.
After the wedding comes marriage. The years of learning one another more deeply. Jobs. Moving. Figuring out adulthood. Parenthood. Tuesday nights. Grocery runs. Learning how the other person loads the dishwasher.
Marriage becomes a collection of ordinary days that slowly turn into a life together. And those seasons deserve remembering too.
Quiet Seasons Matter Too
Some anniversaries feel bigger than others. The first. Ten years. Twenty. The years that mark obvious milestones.
But less obvious seasons matter too.
The years spent balancing work and school. Building a home. Navigating parenthood. Learning how to stay connected when life feels full.
Sometimes those seasons are exactly when couples need space to come back to one another most. Not because anything is wrong, but because life moves quickly. Somewhere between responsibilities and routines, it becomes easy to forget to pause and notice who you are together right now.
That is one of the reasons I love anniversary photos and couples sessions after marriage. Not because you need a big reason or milestone, but because sometimes it is good to step away for an evening.
To dress up.
Slow down.
Laugh together.
And remember yourselves outside of schedules and responsibilities.
Like dating again.
Ordinary Years Become Meaningful Later
One thing I have learned is that the seasons that feel ordinary in the moment rarely stay ordinary.
The long nights eventually end. The busy years shift. The season that feels like it might last forever changes before we realize it.
And later, what once felt normal becomes something we wish we could revisit, even for a moment.
Photos become one way of returning. Not just to how life looked, but who you were together.
Why You’ll Be Glad You Took These Photos Sooner Than You Think
You Do Not Need a Milestone to Celebrate Your Marriage
Life gives us plenty of reasons to celebrate. Anniversaries. New homes. Big accomplishments.
But sometimes, wanting to remember life as it is right now is enough.
Sometimes the reason is simply:
We want to remember this version of us.
To have photos to show not only who you were on your wedding day, but who you have become since. The years in between. The growth. The laughter. The life you have quietly built together.
And perhaps someday, the images you children see hanging on the walls, reminding them that your marriage mattered too.
Because wedding photos tell the story of the beginning.
Marriage deserves remembering too.
