Everyone always wants to know what the best time of year for photos is. And honestly? There isn’t one best time of the year. The best season is the one that fits you. What you want the photos to feel like, what you want to wear, what you want to see hanging in your home, and honestly, what season you actually enjoy being outside in.
Start With Your Favorite Season
What time of year makes you feel most like yourself? What season are you most exacted about? If you hate being hot, don’t choose a summer session just because someone told you summer photographs best. Likewise, if you hate being cold, don’t convince yourself you’ll suddenly love standing outside in October/November. You don’t need to pick everyone else’s favorite season. Pick one you enjoy.
Think About What You Want to Wear
If you’re picturing yourself in a flowy summer dress, winter probably isn’t going to give you the look you’re imagining. If you love pea coats, boots, dresses, scarves, muffs, and layers, winter might be exactly right. Your clothing should match the season so you can feel comfortable. Nothing like freezing on a crisp fall evening in a strapless dress, or sweating in the August sun wearing your favorite blue sweater.
Think About What You Want to See on Your Walls
Photographs are meant to live on the walls of your home, not on a hard drive. If your home is full of lighter, brighter colors and you’re envisioning a large print hanging in your living room, you might want to think about whether deep fall colors fit. And maybe they do! Maybe you love those rich colors and want the contrast.
The point is, it doesn’t matter what you love, but it is worth considering what colors you want to see on your walls.
What Do You Want the Photos to Feel Like?
Do you want warm summer evenings and movement? Something fresh and light in spring? Rich, layered cozy images in the fall? Something quiet and intentional in the winter?
Seasons don’t always cooperate perfectly. Fall can turn cold quickly. Spring showers can pop up without warning. Summer with it’s sunning golden evenings (and high temperatures that can make you sweat). Winter with the beautiful crisp snow, or muddy with lifeless trees. We can plan thoughtfully, but Utah weather can be unpredictable.
This isn’t a problem, it’s just part of choosing a season.
There Really Isn’t a Wrong Answer
The “best” time of year isn’t necessarily the season that everyone tells you is best. It’s the season that fits what you love, how you want to feel, what you want to wear, and what you want these photographs to look and feel like in your home.
And if you’re still not sure? That’s exactly the kind of thing we can talk through together.
